Q&A with Crafts by Kate Cork

Who says ecology and embroidery don't mix!? Kate told me how her embroidery helps to look at the small details in nature, while also being a great stress reliever.

1.So, first of all, where are you based?

Iā€™m based in Bandon, Co. Cork in Ireland

2.What first got you into embroidery?

I first was introduced to cross stitch as a child in school by a (scary) nun, who used to shout if the back of your embroidery was messy šŸ˜‚ I picked up cross stitch every now and again during my life but eventually started embroidering (rather than cross stitch) when doing my PhD as a stress reliever šŸ˜Š

3.How did you learn to stitch?

Iā€™m pretty much self taught, lots of tutorials and YouTube videos but mostly trial and error!

4.What is your favourite technique?

My favourite technique varies, but I love a simple satin stitch šŸ˜Š I also love stitches that give a piece texture, and try to learn new raised stitches when I can.

5.What is your favourite subject matter?

My favourite subject is native Irish species. Iā€™m fascinated by nature, and find it so relaxing to look at plants and animals up close - embroidering really letā€™s you appreciate their little details šŸŒ±

6.Why do you stitch?

I stitch because it makes me so so happy. Iā€™m a serial crafter, always jumping from one craft to the next but I always found my way back to needlework. Itā€™s so relaxing, and a great way to unwind in the evenings after a stressful day!

7.And lastly, where can we find you?

You can find me on Instagram, Facebook and (occasionally) TikTok šŸ˜Š I sell my pieces through these channels as well, so always happy to receive a message if somebody wants to purchase.
