Do you have Notions? Do you know someone with Absolute Notions? Do you even know what I'm talking about!?
If you're not familiar with the term, it's another one of those lovely Hiberno-English turns of phrase. It essentially means you have 'notions above your station'. You're a little bit extra, you like to be fancy, you do things others wouldn't expect of you. For example, setting up an embroidery kit subscription is a bit notion-y!!
And what could show Notions more than some bling!? So we're adding beads to our stitching with this kit. We're using 2 different types of beads - bugle and seed - but we have a couple of different sizes of the seed beads. The bugle beads are the long narrow ones. While the seed beads are probably more what you think of when you picture a bead. They come in sizes 8, 11 and 15 with 8 being the largest and 15 the smallest. Beads are such a great way to add a bit of sparkle to your stitching and relatively simple to work with. Though of course you can get much more complicated than we do in this kit!
We're also using 2 types of thread here. A regular cotton embroidery floss (B5200) and an iridescent polyester one (E5200). Both are similar in that they come as 6-stranded thread, however they feel much different to work with. E5200 is rougher and not quite as flexible - so I recommend keeping your working thread on the shorter side! You can use either thread for the beading, but B5200 is used for the lettering and E5200 is used for the stars.
The stitching on the lettering is a mix of split stitch and long & short - though these two stitches are very similar. And we're using that matte cotton thread. The stars are little more complicated, and we've got some new stitches! Four-pointed stars are filled in with rhodes stitch, which is usually done in a circle but I think it gives a great effect here. And I had to include a star stitch of course. That's on the five-pointed stars. The six-pointed stars (just 2 of them) are completed with the old reliable fly stitch. That's one I usually use for leaves, so it's nice to see it in a different way.
