Beginners Embroidery Course

Monday: Embroidery for beginners

Time: 6pm-7.15pm

Start: 14.09.26

Duration: **8 weeks**

Materials Fee: 10 euro is payable, in cash, to the tutor on the first day of the course.

Notes: All courses are subject to a minimum number in order to proceed. In the event that a course is oversubscribed, places will be offered on a first-booked, first-served basis and a waiting list will then be created. You will be contacted in this event.

Looking to develop a skill? To find a mindful practice? To create something unique and modern? Well, then embroidery for beginners is for you. Each week, Alice will show you different skills that you will practice in class. This course is for beginners and you will start at the very beginning. The first week, you will talk through your materials, cover some of the basics (like how to thread a needle), and learn some simple stitches to get you started. You will build on this knowledge of stitches and materials as the course progresses each week. Each student will create a sampler for the stitches learned, but will also apply them to some small designs. You will also look at samples and images to give these stitches context. Towards the end of the course, Alice will also discuss creating your own embroidery designs. She will support you with the different types of stitches and inspire you to create unique, personal, and modern miniature works of art. You will cover line stitches, filling stitches and textural stitches – many of these would be based in Crewelwork or modern freestyle embroidery.

Materials needed for this course (can also be purchased on day 1 from the tutor)

Embroidery hoop (ideally 6inch or 8inch size),

cotton fabric (at least 2 pieces slightly larger than your embroidery hoop),

embroidery needles (various sizes),

and embroidery thread (at least 2 skeins of different colours).

These materials can be purchased from Alice at the first class at a cost of €10.

Silk Shading Embroidery Course

Hand embroidery for Improvers
Time: Thursdays,11am-1pm
Start: 01.10.2026
Duration: 4 weeks

Description:

Silk shading is a hand embroidery technique that uses stranded embroidery thread to create a subtle transition between two or more shades of thread. Also known as ‘thread painting’ or ‘needle painting’, silk shading is a method of stitching that allows you to create designs that have an appearance closer to a painting than to a piece of embroidery.

In this 4-week course, we will learn the technique through this ‘art nouveau floral’ design – along with covering split stitch and stem stitch. The course is suitable for those who have a bit of experience with embroidery and are looking to try a new technique.
