This kit was very much inspired by 90s graphic design. Think Saved by the Bell, MTV, The Spice Girls. It's bold, colourful and a little chaotic. I've had a vague idea of this design lurking in the back of my mind for a long time. I didn't know what words to put with it or exactly what shapes to use. It was like an image that was just out of focus. I played around with plenty of seanfhocail (irish sayings) but none of them quite fit. And then one day it just clicked!
No Fadhbs, Just Vibes - a bilingual phrase was definitely the way to go! Fadhb is the Irish word for problem or issue. So the phrase reads "no problems, just vibes". But of course, the Irish rhymes too.

We're using 5 different colours of thread in this kit. And 5 different stitches too. The Seed and Trellis are two great stitches for filling a large area, and I think they really suit the 90s vibe too. Then Satin and Couching give us those lovely solid blocks of colour. Again, something integral to 90s graphics. And of course, Stem stitch (my absolute favourite for all the outlines and the text.
The colours in this kit are also typical of the 90s. Contrasting black and white, turquoise and purple, and the iconic flourescent yellow. Although we don't use any pink thread, the pink diamond printed on the fabric adds to the aesthetic perfectly too. If you're creating this piece from the pattern instead, I definitely recommend applying pink fabric or paint to your piece to get the full effect!
Now, that fabulous fluorescent yellow is achieved using DMC Light Effects thread. If you haven't worked with this before, be prepared to get a little bit frustrated. I know, I'm sorry to be putting you through this in a kit BUT I do think it's good to get the experience of working with different materials.
It is very similar to the regular stranded cotton in that it's made up of 6 strands. But it's polyester, so much more slippery to work with. That's why couching is a great stitch to use with this thread! It can be quite difficult to get other stitches nice and neat with this thread, especially when using more than 1 strand. But with couching, you're not passing the thread through the fabric as much as you do for other stitches. So it's a great way to get used to this thread without wanting to throw your embroidery hoop out the window!

So there you have it - July's Needle Nerd kit. Please tell me you'll stitch this while listening to B*Witched!?
